Frequently Asked Questions - Sweet Multiport

What is the Sweet Multiport?

The Sweet Multiport provides additional FireWire and USB ports, and a 5-in-1 memory card reader for G4 and G3 tower systems. The ports are conveniently located in the drive bay under the CD/DVD drive, giving you instant access to these ports. You no longer have to get on your knees and blindly reach around the back of your system to connect your FireWire and USB peripherals.

What Mac systems are supported?

The Sweet Multiport works with all G4 tower systems (1999-2004). This includes the "Mirror Drive Door", "QuickSilver", "Gigabit Ethernet", "AGP graphics", and "PCI Graphics" models. Also, the B&W G3 is also supported, although the plastic faceplate will be graphite instead of blue.

The Sweet Multiport requires an open PCI slot and open drive bay below the CD drive. If a Zip or other drive is installed in that drive bay, it must be removed.

Does it work with OS 9 and OS X?

Yes, both OS X (10.1 to 10.3.x) and OS 9 are supported. Also, no drivers or extensions are required for the Sweet Multiport to work.

How does the Sweet Multiport connect to my system?

The Sweet Multiport is comprised of several components. First, there is a PCI card that is a combination FireWire and USB hub. This card connects to one of the built-in ports at the back of your computer (cables included). It also provides two additional FireWire ports and two USB ports.

Next, there is a front panel card that has 2 FireWire ports, 1 USB port, and a 5-in-one memory card reader. This card mounts in a metal carrier so that it can fit in the lower drive bay (5.25" for Mirror Drive Door systems, 3.5" for all other systems). This connects to the Sweet PCI card using a specially designed cable.

Finally, we provide a plastic faceplate so that your system will have a “factory” look. For the Mirror Drive Door systems, we provide a metal handle to easily open the lower drive door.

Why are there different versions of the Sweet Multiport?

There are enough differences between the different G4 models that we needed to create unique mechanical parts to support the different systems. The lower drive bay on some G4 models is 3.5” wide, and 5.25” wide on others. Also, the plastic faceplates are different. Initially we’re offering different kits for each model, so please be sure to order the correct one for your system.

How do I install the Sweet Multiport?

The Sweet Multiport is fairly simple to install and requires just a standard screwdriver. A PCI card must be installed. And the front panel card installs in the lower drive bay at the front of your system. We include instructions to help in the installation.

How much does the Sweet Multiport cost?

The price of the Sweet Multiport is $49.95 plus shipping.

How many ports are provided? What memory card formats are supported?

The Sweet Multiport provides two FireWire, one USB port and a 5-in-one memory card reader in the front of the G4 system. In addition, there are two additional FireWire and two USB ports on the Sweet PCI card. The memory card formats supported are: Compact Flash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia card. Also, the QuickSilver G4 systems support only the Compact Flash and Microdrive formats.

Does the Sweet Multiport work with USB 2.0 or FireWire 800?

The Sweet Multiport works with the built-in FireWire and USB ports on your G4 systems. Those ports are USB 1.1 and FireWire 400.

Why aren't more card formats supported on the G4 QuickSilver machines?

The size of the opening of the lower drive bay on the QuickSilver systems is very short. It appears that it was designed to be just tall enough for a Zip disk. So there is just space for the Compact Flash/Microdrive connector on this system.

Is system sleep supported?

Yes, sleep is fully functional.

Does the memory card reader work with iPhoto?

The iPhoto software automatically recognizes the Sweet Multiport card reader. If a memory card contains pictures from a digital camera, iPhoto can automatically launch when the card is inserted.

Is any software or drivers required to use the Sweet Mulitport?

The Sweet Multiport uses the standard drivers that are included in the Mac OS. No additional software needs to be installed.
